Biography:

Trombonist Jeremy Berkman is a graduate of Juilliard School of Music and Oberlin Conservatory and College (with degrees in music and economics), where he studied with Thomas Cramer and Per Brevig and has studied sackbut more recently with Greg Ingles. Jeremy is the Principal Trombonist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, and a member of the sackbut-centred Cappella Borealis. He first encountered Owen Underhill’s music performing modern trombone alongside viola da gamba and recorder in Owen’s remarkable opera, Star Catalogues. Jeremy is a co-founder with Owen of Vancouver based Turning Point Ensemble, and in 2011 was honoured with Vancouver’s Mayor’s Arts Award (Music). He has contributed to over 40 commercially released recordings and is featured with the Bozzini String Quartet in Still Image (music of Owen Underhill) on the Centerdisc label. With The Peggy Lee Band, led by cellist Peggy Lee, he has toured nationally and internationally, and as a band member been nominated for a Juno Award. Jeremy’s sackbut is inspired by various instruments of the 16th and early 17th century but made in 2022 by Vancouver Island hornist and brass instrument maker virtuoso Andrew Clark.
