Biography:

A versatile musician for whom “alternative or avant-garde approaches to his instrument are
only part of the everyday tool kit” (Georgia Straight), Canadian clarinetist Liam Hockley is a dedicated advocate for new and experimental music. His repertoire encompasses not only the standard clarinet repertoire, but also the results of collaborations with composers on innovative new works.

Liam has performed as a soloist or ensemble member on three continents, including
appearances with Vancouver New Music, Music on Main (Vancouver), the Salt New Music Festival
(Victoria), KLANGRAUM (Düsseldorf), NUNC! (Evanston), the Kuandu Arts Festival (Taipei),
and the Tongyeong International Music Festival (South Korea). His performances have garnered
him many accolades and awards, including an interpretation prize at the Stockhausen-Konzert und -Kurse Kürten.

Pulse-Tide, Liam’s debut album featuring contemporary works for basset horn, was listed by The
Wire (UK) as one of 2024’s top 10 Modern Composition releases. Liam has also recorded for the
Redshift and CMC Centrediscs labels and has published in The Clarinet and Foci Arts/Words.

Liam holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in performance from the University of British Columbia.
